Heartfulness Mobile Digital Literacy Project

2024.60 - Saturday, 16 November 2024

In July 2024, the Heartfulness Mobile Digital Literacy Project began its journey to empower students, bringing digital literacy to schools, government Industrial Training Institutes, and women’s self-help groups. This initiative is made possible through a partnership between the Arvind Foundation, HP, and Heartfulness.

Through the innovative use of a Mobile Computer Lab in a van equipped with 120 laptops, the project kicked off at Chegur High School adjoining Kanha Shanti Vanam. Students from Grades 8, 9, and 10 got introduced to digital skills. Every Friday, the school became a centre for learning as dedicated volunteers guided students through the basics of Scratch Junior programming and computational thinking, using the mobile computer lab and laptops to support their learning.

The classes went beyond training the students in technical skills. Each session started with Heart Connect and Heartfulness Relaxation along with simple yogic deep breathing exercises to prepare students for focused learning. Brighter Minds Brain Gym exercises further enhanced cognitive abilities. Students learned computer basics, practised typing, and discovered the creative possibilities of Scratch programming. Each session concluded with reflection and relaxation to help students unwind, leaving them calm and refreshed.

Impact and Outcomes

The students were enthusiastic, especially in their eagerness to dive into Scratch programming. Teachers also actively participated, motivated to improve their own digital skills. Breathing exercises, Brighter Minds exercises, and Relaxation sessions became favourite parts of the program. There was an atmosphere of positivity and focused learning. Heartfulness meditation was introduced to Grade 10 students and they are now joining the Sunday group meditation sessions at Kanha Shantivanam.

Phase 1 concluded with a special celebration on Children's Day, November 14, 2024, at Kanha Shantivanam. The students proudly shared their group projects in Scratch Junior, presenting their animation films to an evaluation committee and a supportive audience from the residents of Kanha. Amongst the many dignitaries who celebrated the students' achievements, there were members from the Heartfulness community, the Headmaster, and staff of Chegur High School. Certificates were awarded, and the day ended with a joyful lunch.

Future Plans and Expansion

Looking ahead, we’re excited about the Phase 2 of the Heartfulness Mobile Digital Literacy Project. We will extend the program to more schools in the vicinity of Kanha, reaching up to 120 students daily across three weekly sessions. The curriculum will cover advanced topics like Python, MS Office Suite, and AI/ML tools. The Brighter Minds program will soon be introduced to Grades 6 to 8, supporting the growth of younger students.

We are also working on additional certifications and other ways to collaborate and help students showcase their skills and engage in healthy competition. Our flagship Heartfulness initiatives like the HELP program, essay competitions, and visits to Kanha Shanti Vanam will be inclusive in the project.

Since its launch, the Heartfulness Mobile Digital Literacy Project has been making a meaningful impact on students at the Kanha Educare Activity Center as well. With access to laptops, the students have gained exposure and experience in Scratch Junior programming, digital drawing, and painting.

The Heartfulness Mobile Digital Literacy Project is more than just a program. It is a catalyst for change. It is a gateway to opportunity. We empower students with skills and the inner resources through meditation, not merely enabling them to navigate the digital world, we are helping them shape it.
