Himalayan Ashram Satkhol - Visiting Guide

Arriving

  • Visits are through batches (see Batches).
  • Bring your Permission Letter (digital or print) and SRCM ID card for registration.
  • For any other visit context, write to satkholashram@srcm.org.

Inner orientation

  • Satkhol is for immersion in silence and self-reflection.
  • Let the stay be inward-facing; keep outings minimal.
  • Approach the atmosphere with receptivity, not activity.
  • Allow simplicity to become a way of being, so that meditation and daily actions share the same depth.
  • Come with longing and openness, the only true qualification for this field.

Living Silence

Satkhol does not function by outer rules or rigid retreat structures. The silence here is not imposed but lived, a natural atmosphere that deepens when each person holds it with care. What preserves this sanctity is your own sensitivity: keeping conversations minimal, avoiding phone use, moving quietly in shared areas, and treating the Ashram as a space where silence itself guides your actions.

This collective discipline allows everyone to experience the field of stillness in its pure form.

Care of place

  • Live simply; keep shared spaces orderly and unobtrusive.
  • Be mindful of natural resources, use water responsibly.
  • Self-washing clothes is not advised due to limited water; please bring enough clothes for your full stay.
  • Dress modestly at all times.
  • Silence in the meditation hall is sacred. Phones must be switched off or left in lockers/rooms. Even the faint vibration of a device disturbs the subtle atmosphere.

Health & readiness

  • The Ashram has no on-site medical facility. Travel only if fit for hill terrain and simple arrangements; carry all prescribed medicines for the full stay.
  • An inwardly steady orientation, receptive to silence. If under active medical/psychological care or recently recovering, please travel when stable on your doctor’s advice.

Meals, café & store

  • Simple vegetarian meals are served in the Ashram dining area for batch participants.
  • The Ashram Store stocks publications, basic provisions, and some local preserves.
  • The Pearl Café offers a variety of paid meals (separate from Ashram dining).

Weather & packing

  • October–March (winter): cold to very cold; ~–2°C to 8°C. Carry thermals, shawls, sweaters, warm hat, muffler, gloves, and woollen socks.
  • April–September: weather is changeable; nights can be as low as ~8°C, days up to ~25°C.
  • Rain or light showers can occur any time of year. A raincoat or umbrella is helpful. Rain-friendly footwear is often better than closed shoes when wet.
  • Footwear: the terrain is sloped and uneven. Good, supportive walking shoes are necessary.
  • Layers are recommended year-round; a small torch/flashlight and water bottle can be useful.

Children & accessibility

  • Visits with young children are usually not suited to the silent atmosphere; if attending, constant supervision is essential.
  • No wheelchair access.

Substances

  • Alcohol, tobacco, and recreational drugs are not permitted.
